Empowering the Next Generation of Union Mechanical Foremen

The Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA) of Georgia recognized the challenge of motivating skilled journeymen to pursue foreman roles within the union mechanical industry. To address this, I partnered with MCA of Georgia to design and deliver a focused two-day Foreman Training Program. The objective was to clarify the unique responsibilities of the foreman, inspire leadership, and provide practical tools and strategies for success in this pivotal role.

This collaborative initiative brought together the expertise of consultant Tom Williams, MCA of Georgia Executive Director Andy Sumpter, and myself. The curriculum was thoughtfully developed to blend industry best practices with real-world challenges, ensuring that each session remained relevant and impactful for participants seeking to move into foreman positions.

Day 1, led by Tom Williams and Andy Sumpter, introduced participants to the essential skills and responsibilities of the foreman, with a particular focus on the importance of the short interval plan. On Day 2, I guided attendees through interactive sessions centered on leadership—covering conflict management, prioritization, effective delegation, and team relationship building. These sessions were designed to build upon the foundational knowledge from Day 1, equipping participants with actionable leadership frameworks.

The Foreman Training Program was a resounding success, earning positive feedback and leading to the scheduling of future sessions. By directly addressing the challenge of attracting journeymen to foreman roles and investing in their leadership development, the MCA of Georgia has reinforced its commitment to the long-term strength and vitality of the union mechanical industry.6
